The First 30 Seconds: Crafting Your Initial Interview Impression

Key personality aspects that get portrayed in the critical first 20-30 seconds of an SSB interview.

The first 20-30 seconds of an interview are crucial as they set the stage for how you are perceived. Here are a couple of very important personality aspects that get portrayed during this initial period:

  • 1. Appropriate Attire

You should be appropriately dressed for the interview. This demonstrates the respect you're giving to the occasion and reflects how much it matters to you. Every interviewer notices your attire, whether intentionally or unintentionally. A shabby or overly casual outfit can create a negative impression, even if not explicitly mentioned.

  • 2. Confident Demeanor and Entry

The way you walk into the interview room, meet and greet the panel, and take your seat all contribute to the impression of your confidence. Your body language should be positive, and a genuine smile can make a significant difference. This shows you belong to the occasion and are not feeling out of place. Aim to make every moment count. It's also a good practice to clear your throat before entering so that your voice comes out clearly.

  • 3. Greeting Etiquette

If the interview panel includes both men and women, it is customary and respectful to greet the woman member(s) first, irrespective of their seniority or designation.

  • 4. Handshake Protocol

Shake hands only if the interviewer extends their hand first. This shows your awareness of professional courtesies.
