SSB Interview: Addressing Strengths & Weaknesses - A Founder's Perspective

Guidance on tackling the common interview question about your personal strengths and weaknesses.

How did you find the weaknesses and strengths in you and how did you explain that in the SSB? I have answered a similar question earlier and some people did find it helpful during their SSB. Atleast that is what was conveyed to me. Hence, I am copying the same answer here again. Hope this helps you as well.

This is a very common SSB Interview Question. Candidates think a lot about the cross questioning that would happen when they mention a particular weakness. Or, they worry about the negative perception that they may create in Interviewer’s mind.

I can give you my inputs on how you should approach this question irrespective of what your weakness is. Answer these 3 questions to yourself.

  • 1. Why do you think it is a weakness?

What is wrong in being 'Short Tempered', or being 'Lazy', or being 'Weak in Communication Skills', or being 'Poor in Academics'?

  • 2. Give examples from your real life when this particular weakness affected you.

Or, it stopped you from achieving something. Or, it affected your chances of being successful in something.

  • 3. What are you doing to improve this weakness?

Since when are you trying to improve it? Have you got any positive results? If not, what else can you try to improve it?

If you have good and honest answers to above 3 questions regarding your weakness, then you are in a good space. Don't worry. You are not expected to be perfect, neither you can be. Everybody has weaknesses. Its alright as long as you are putting sincere efforts to improve upon it.

Important Note: Being a chain smoker, alcoholic, compulsive gambler etc. are not weaknesses, these are severely bad addictions. Not acceptable at the age when you are appearing for SSB. Don’t try and find answers to such things. Just stop them right away.
